改编自《白鲸》作者赫尔曼·梅尔维尔19世纪的同名作品《Bartleby》。从现在的角度看我认为男主应该是得了严重的抑郁症。片中配乐、街道上的空镜头、巴特尔比独自游走、几次出现的突然从树上飞起的群鸟等等，孤独感几乎溢出画面。老板的扮演者斯科菲尔德据说推掉了《雷恩的女儿》米切姆的角色出演本片。豆瓣片名《老板是空气》令人误以为是喜剧片，其实并不是。
